Of the two, water is far more important because most people will be able to last for a couple of weeks (or even a month) without food – but they only last for about 3 days without water. So it’s imperative that you make water preparedness a priority in your prepping plans.

Emergency Water Supply Gear Home and Outdoor

When it comes to water, there are 2 areas you’ll need to focus on:

  1. Water storage
  2. Water purification

Both are just as important and the methods used will depend on the crisis and situation that you’re in.

Water Storage for Emergency

Before even thinking about surviving outdoors, etc. you must take care of the basic requirement – making sure there’s enough water at home. Or a means to filter contaminated water.

Taking shelter in the safety of your home will usually be the best option in most types of crises such as floods, hurricanes, terrorist attacks, etc. Only if a hurricane or some other natural disaster threatens the safety of your home will you evacuate.

So it goes without saying that you’ll need to store gallons of water in your house. The amount of water you store should be enough for your family, pets and yourself – for about 7 days (minimum).

Jerry Cans for Water Supplies

Ideally, you should use water containers which are BPA-free, impact resistant and portable to store your water. The Jerry can containers used by the military are an almost perfect type of container to use.

Since they’re made of plastic, they’ll not corrode and will be fungus resistant. Their design ensures that you can line them up along the side of a wall easily, and with a rack, they’re even stackable.

Where you store your water containers is important too. If you store them in the garage, you may lose your stores in a flood.

Protect Your Emergency Water Supplies

Or if the situation is bad, neighbors may observe you carting water to your house. Next thing you know, you’ll wake up one morning to see your garage has been broken into and all your water stolen. Desperate times create desperate people.

So you’ll want to store the water indoors and above ground level.

If you’re bugging out, you may either load a few of the Jerry cans in your car or you may use a water storage cube. Since it’s collapsible and comes with a spigot, the cube is more convenient.

When you’re camping by a lake, you can always fill up the plastic cube with water, purify it and the water will be fit for consumption.

Another important point to note is that water that’s stored in containers is often quite heavy. A full Jerry can is considerably cumbersome to lug around if you don’t have a vehicle.

If the thirst doesn’t kill you, the exhaustion sustained from carrying these containers just might.

If a situation arises where you need to bug out in the wilderness and you have to travel on foot, you’ll want the water to be ‘divisible’ among the family members so that you don’t need to carry the heavy container around.

The best option here is to have survival water pouches that you can ‘grab and go’.

Water Pouches -Family Emergency Water Supplies

Everyone in the family takes 5 to 7 packs and you’re good to go. These are usually compact, easy to carry and lightweight. At about 125ml each, they’ll satisfy your thirst conveniently.

A box of 64 pouches is inexpensive and is good for a family of 5. The water in these pouches have a shelf life of 5 years. You won’t need to go through the hassle of purifying the water. So you have water that’s easily portable and potable at the same time. Fantastic!

Water Purification

Usually, water purification is necessary when you procure water from outdoors

Emergency Water Sources

  • lakes
  • wells,
  • streams, etc.

Water Contamination

However, if there’s a hurricane which results in a flood, the water treatment plants in your area may be compromised. This will mean that the tap water that’s coming into your home is no longer safe for drinking.

Even if you have the convenience of running water, that may not necessarily mean you can drink the water. In situations like these, you’ll want to treat the water first.

The best way to do that will be to first fill up a container with water and then use a couple of water purification tablets to purify the water.

Even if water is clear, there may be bacteria, parasites and other contaminants in the water that could make you seriously ill… and during a survival scenario, you definitely don’t want to become sick.

Water treatment tablets can be used indoors and outdoors. If you’re outdoors, you may wish to use a water microfilter first. Once the water is filtered, then you may purify it.

In some situations, especially if you’re bugging out, you may not have access to a lake or stream. However, you may come across a puddle of water that looks stagnant and questionable.

The thought of drinking the water here may turn your stomach. Ugh!

But what if you’re desperately thirsty?

If possible, you may collect this water in a saucepan and boil it first, if you have a mess tin and camping stove.

Once the water is boiled, you should let it cool, then filter it, purify it… and as a final measure, you should use a LifeStraw and drink the water.

While the LifeStraw is good enough to drink the water straight from the puddle, you’re better off taking a few extra steps just to be safe.

If you’re camping outdoors, it’ll be convenient to have a gravity-fed water purifier bag that you can hang on a tree branch. Family members will be able to easily fill up their cups/bottles whenever they need water.

Concluding Emergency Water Supply Gear

By now you’ll realize that emergency water survival is all about having enough clean, drinking water. Purified and clean water is crucial to ensure that you and your family’s needs are met. You can never store too much water. Plan well and do what you need to.
